Texas Power Grid - Lights Out...Still? Understanding the grid. Preparing your home.

Texas has one of the nation's most unique electric systems. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) manages the flow of electricity to millions of homes and businesses across most of the state. During periods of extreme heat, winter storms, or unexpected generation shortages, ERCOT may call for conservation or direct controlled outages to help maintain grid stability.

Texas homeowners receive electricity from several types of providers:

• Retail Electric Providers (REPs) – Companies that sell electricity plans in deregulated areas.
• Electric Cooperatives (Co-ops) – Member-owned utilities serving many suburban and rural communities.
• Municipal Utilities – City-owned electric providers serving selected communities.

While these organizations work hard to deliver reliable electricity, no provider can completely eliminate the possibility of power interruptions caused by severe weather, equipment failures, or grid emergencies.

The short and long term impact of population growth, the EV explosion and the expansion of AI Data centers will have energy strains on the overloaded power grid in Texas for years to come---so for now, the Lights are still out on the power front!

Some remedies will be addressed.
